A shrill ringtone cut through the tension like a knife. Drew visibly flinched - the façade of his calmness cracked as he glanced at the screen of his cell phone. His face hardened, his jaw tensed and I could see his usually controlled composure waver. I leaned forward slightly, my pulse racing. "Who is it, Drew?" I asked, my voice sharper than I'd intended. But he didn't answer immediately - instead, an awkward, meaningful pause followed. At that moment, I knew that whatever was behind the call, it was something he wanted to hide from me at all costs.

Drew waved it off and mumbled with feigned composure, "It's nothing, Nina. Don't worry about it," as he averted his eyes from me. But his every word only fanned the flames inside me. He was never usually this dismissive and his indifference hit me harder than I had expected. "Nothing?" I repeated, barely concealing the anger in my voice. His evasion felt like a silent betrayal - one that finally ignited my pent-up indignation.
