A shock ran through me at her insistence. Duty or not, this was too much to just accept. "I can't just give up my house, Mom," I replied firmly, shaking my head. Her face reflected a mixture of surprise and indignation, but I wasn't prepared to give in under pressure. They had lived their lives; now it was my turn. It wasn't my job to correct their decisions.

Struggling for justification
Mom looked at me with wide, almost pleading eyes as I felt her struggling for words to justify her demand. Her desperation to make her demands seem reasonable became clear. I fell silent and held back in the face of their strained reasoning. It seemed they expected simple obedience simply because of our shared blood, ignoring the years of pain and independence I had fought for.
