Plea from the brother
A short time later, my phone vibrated with a text from Jack: "Hey, can we talk?" he asked in an unusually exasperated tone. As we spoke, his tone changed. "I really need your help, man," he pleaded, and there was something in his voice that sounded like guilt. But was it real, or just another layer in his ongoing orchestration of need? Part of me wanted to believe, but I knew I had to be careful.

During our conversation, Jack finally admitted, "I made choices, okay? Bad choices." His voice was raw, exposing a layer of honesty I hadn't seen before. "It wasn't just bad luck. I just didn't want to hold on to something," he continued, revealing the core of his story. It was as if a mask was falling and unraveling his earlier stories. It was a harsh dose of reality, but at least it was the truth.
